The Republic of Costa Rica is bordered by Nicaragua, Panama, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Costa Rica is an oasis of peace and tranquility in Central America. Democracy, a policy of neutrality and exemplary environmental measures (27% of the country is protected as national parks and nature reserves, and 5% of the world's biodiversity is to be found here) have ensured this paradise remains pristine, indeed the country has seen a boom in eco-tourism in recent years. The vegetation varies from evergreen rainforests, mangrove swamps and oak forests, to pampa, and is the natural habitat of an astonishingly wide variety of animals and plants. The face of the country is dominated by wide strips of cultivated land where tropical fruits and spices, used in its diverse and delicious cuisine, are grown. The colloquial term for a native of Costa Rica is "Tico" or "Tica", the local language is Spanish, "Pura Vida" being the omnipresent motto that pervades life here.

Despite Cuba's battered economy since the break-up of the Soviet Union, there are many charming towns and villages, as well as secluded resorts on typically Caribbean beaches. But the visitor may find Cuba too enchanting to spend the entire holiday lying in the sun: the vibrant capital Havana, the stunning, tobacco-infused scenery of Vinales Valley, the exquisite colonial town of Trinidad, as well as the soaring mountains in the east, provide unforgettable experiences.

On December 5th 1492 Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Hispaniola and founded "La Navidad", said to be the first European settlement in the New World. He became Viceroy of Hispaniola and settled in the place where today's capital, Santo Domingo, is situated. During the following centuries, innumerable pirate raids gradually brought the export trade to a standstill, but French colonialists who settled in the west of the island managed to drive them off. Thus, the first independent black republic of the world was founded: Republique d'Haiti. In 1844 the former Spanish settlers declared their independence from Spain and founded the Dominican Republic. The Dominicans are a very hospitable, open-minded and peace-loving people. Stress and hectic are unknown to them — quite understandable as they are blessed with almost constant holiday temperatures and idyllic surroundings. Travellers are welcome to enjoy the beauty of approx. 1600km (979 miles) of coast, with marvellous palm beaches and snug bays, or the mountains with their lavish profusion of flora and fauna.
